Album: Olof Melander – Tangles

Olof Melander‘s debut on PLX Records, “Tangles,” is a lush and textured odyssey that defies easy categorisation. With a background in experimental beat-making, the Swedish artist has crafted a sound world entirely his own – a transcendental tapestry woven from ambient atmospheres, free jazz explorations, and quirky electronic flourishes.

Melander is joined on this 17-track masterpiece by Aquiles Navarro, who regular site visitors will know from his work with Irreversible Entanglements and Tcheser Holmes. The trumpeter, composer and DJ’s soulful contributions, which range from improvised trumpet melodies to percussion work and even vocals on “Corazon,” imbue the album with a warmth and earthiness that perfectly counterbalances Melander’s cerebral experimentation.

Standouts like the aptly titled “Floating”, “The Magpie’s Dream”, “On The Other Side” and the title track showcase the duo’s seamless interplay, as Navarro’s lyrical trumpet lines dance atop Melander’s undulating sonic landscapes. Elsewhere, tracks like “Mind” and “Vanishing Point” venture into more abstract territory, reveling in the spaces between notes and the interplay of texture and timbre.

Ultimately, “Tangles” is a work of rare beauty and imagination, a genre-defying statement that rewards deep listening with its ever-unfolding layers of sound and emotion. For adventurous ears seeking a transcendent musical experience, this album is an essential acquisition.
