Rasco – Sleeping Sea (TS Premiere)

Jerusalem trio Rasco is about to release their second album, “Dmaot.” The sixth track is “Sleeping Sea,” which can be thought of as an allegorical composition signifying the ocean’s overpowering attributes.

Electric guitarist Eden Atiya and bassist Gaya Wajsman first met in Jerusalem, which eventually led to the formation of the trio Rasco with drummer Itay Hamudi. The name Rasco is a reference to Charlie Megira’s acclaimed track “At the Rasco.” The trio has cited iconic artists like The Cramps, Beach Boys, Elvis, April March, and others as their inspiration.

“Sleeping Sea” accentuates Rasco’s metamorphosis as a trio. Like the previous record, the guitar riffs are still entwined with ethereal vocals, but some things have changed. The apparent simplicity of “Sleeping Sea” is nothing more than an illusion. The eerie and spooky ambience that reverberates incessantly throughout the track paints a completely different picture.

Vocals have always been at the forefront of Rasco. “Sleeping Sea” has just that, but with a more overpowering presence due to immaculate vocal articulation and eccentric guitar work, set against a background of laid-back, groovy bass and drumming.

While retaining the garage, surf rock and psych elements in this track, and other tracks on this record as well, the approach to composing for electric guitar as a vocal-like harmonising instrument sets this track apart from the other songs under the aegis of the same genre. The little guitar solo section which dances right between the border of atonal ambiguity and tonal catharsis.

“Dmaot” is out on May 3rd via Batov Records – pre-order here.
