‘Journeys’ is the latest single from the London-based trio Caytra. It follows their debut self-titled EP in 2022, which was heavily acclaimed across multiple platforms.
Caytra consists of guitarist Sam Ithell, drummer James Gullis, and bassist Corner Cotteril. Formed in late 2019, their first EP was praised by Gilles Peterson, BBCR6, Jazz FM, Soho radio, and many others. Their approach to music is characterised by a unique blend of technicality and danceability, drawing from London’s nightlife and UK jazz scene.
As the trio notes, this song emerged from late-night jam sessions. The palpable spontaneity is evident from the very beginning. All three members play in a tight, groovy pocket in the intro. Drummer Gullis’ snare sounds perfect throughout the song. From cymbals to kickdrums, Gullis showcases his utter dominance.
Guitarist Ithell’s phenomenal jazz-inspired playing is imbued with math rock-like articulation, which speaks volumes of the diversity of his influences. The syncopated riff in the intro and fluid lines in the verse teem with fresh ideas.
The tightly held groove that dances throughout the track was possible due to Cotteril’s bass lines, which stay in a perfect pocket and simultaneously add to the pool of melodic ideas.
Improvisation is the core of this trio, and you will notice that in each section of this single. ‘Journeys’ encapsulates the spontaneity of London’s nightlife through the lens of contemporary jazz narrative. It demonstrates the virtuosic technical playing of laid-back broken grooves and uplifting voice-led chord melody in tandem, signifying their progression and growth as friends and collaborators.
