The quiet start to 2024 has definitely passed us by, and we’re now swimming in a sea of incredible new releases. One release that shouldn’t be overlooked is the upcoming second album from Maverick Instrumentalists Ill Considered. Entitled ‘Precipice’, it follows 2021’s ‘Liminal Space’ and is set for release on 22nd March with New Soil. Described as “ a raw and stripped back expression of high-wire collective improvisation”, the upcoming album sees Idris Rahman (sax), Liran Donin (bass), and Emre Ramazanoglu (drums) return to its core trio form after the expansive sonics of ‘Liminal Space’.

In addition to the announcement, Ill Considered has offered up ‘Jellyfish’, a no-frills showcase of their improvisational skills, that gives us a taste of what to expect from their second studio album. ‘Jellyfish’ is a track that draws you in and invites you to immerse yourself and lose track of time, with Donin’s soothing undercurrent of bass complemented perfectly by Ramazanoglu’s gentle throbbing on the drums. The soothing atmosphere is occasionally disrupted by the wild sax burst of Rahman, who teases the potential for unrestrained liberty, which in turn escalates the tension in the music.

Of the new single, the trio say, “Jellyfish was the first track from the new album sessions that made us feel like this new stripped situation could work well. We’re at peace with its wonky, undulating completeness.”

‘Jellyfish’ comes with an accompanying visualiser, showcasing the talented illustrator Vincent De Boer meticulously crafting the artwork for the record. Watch the video below and check out the artwork above.
