Nick Schofield – Picture Perfect (TS Premiere)

We can’t think of a better way to start the day than hitting the play button and enjoying the elegant swirl of “Picture Perfect” by Nick Schofield.  The song is beautifully complemented by a video created by Christopher Honeywell, which truly amplifies its poetic essence.

The Quebecois composer and synthesizer savant is gearing up for the release of his new album, Ambient Ensemble. Inspired by the expansive and serene sounds of new-age flautist Joanna Brouk, Ambient Ensemble finds a distant space within the modern genre, rubbing shoulders with site favourites such as Blue Lake, Ana Roxanne, and Joseph Shabason.

On his forthcoming opus, Schofield’s music playfully dances its way through time. Distant piano, vintage synths, grounding double bass, sliding fretless flourishes, warm violin and soothing vocals, with convivial accents of clarinet converge. It’s a kaleidoscope of past, present, and future sounds. One cannot help but be drawn to the distant echoes of the piano, an element so beautiful in its understated elegance. These refrains penetrate layers of instrumentation, creating a captivating aura of nostalgia. They tiptoe on your senses, inviting you into Schofield’s musical universe marinated in memories.

On the album, Schofield is joined by Yolande Laroche, lending her voice and clarinet skills, Mika Posen on the violin, and Philippe Charbonneau, showcasing his talents on the fretless electric bass and double bass.

Ambient Ensemble is out on February 9th via Backward Music, available digitally, on vinyl and CD

Picture Perfect is my most upbeat ambient song. It features pulsing piano, sparkling synths and swelling string arrangements – all recorded in a church with naturally resounding reverb.
The song is about envisioning perfection, while also recognizing the perfection of the present moment.
