With his fifth album Palms, releasing on Friday via Bastard Jazz, London-based instrumentalist and producer Andy Baxter, aka Robohands, gifts a guest playlist for Twistedsoul to give us a look inside the music he connected with while mixing the upcoming album. It includes everything from legendary artists such as Dorothy Ashby and Yusef Lateef to contemporary artists like Fabiano do Nascimento and Makaya McCraven. This enriching playlist features a diverse range of music encompassing various styles, moods, grooves and perspectives. Immerse yourself in the music below while delving into Baxter’s insights into the selected tracks.
“This playlist is made up of the songs I listened to the most during the mixing phase of my new album ‘Palms’, and features a lot of artists that also influence my playing style on drums and guitar. Its heavily leaning towards jazzier stuff but there are a few indie tracks on there, I tend to switch between lots of genres when listening. I like the idea of creating film soundtracks when making albums, and these tracks all seemed quite cinematic to me.
Listening particularly to some releases from the legendary ECM label helped with getting perspective on where my mixes were in terms of depth, those albums are always huge and full sounding. For harp sounds, getting lots of saturation and driven tones, listening to the work of Dorothy Ashby really helped, the song ‘By The Time I Get To Memphis’ being a great track that showcases her unique sound.”
‘Palms’ is a new direction for his project and a record that thematically journeys into modern reinterpretations of jazz, downtempo, acoustic and ambient music.
