Having already established their live reputation in the north of England with sold-out shows, Emergence Collective will release their second album, Fly Tower, which contains recordings from last year’s performance at the Abbeydale Picturehouse Fly Tower in Sheffield. Part of their collective principle is that their music is partly informed by the location where it is created – a space’s history and sonic properties. For this recording, reverberation was a key factor.
The 30-plus-strong ever-changing outfit – spearheaded by Juliana Day (recorders/whistles), Rob Bentall (nyckelharpa), Tim Knowles (guitar) and Zebedee Budworth (hammered dulcimer) recently shared the album’s lead track ‘S7 1FS-3’.
Despite being improvised music, it is astonishingly beautiful. The moods develop organically, and the structures are so clearly defined. Floating somewhere between minimalist composers like Steve Reich and Terry Riley, the expansive visions of Joshua Abrams & Natural Information Society and Alex McClean’s pattern music prepare to be utterly immersed.
