Cantrips – The Prayer (TS Premiere)

I’ve been bumping this cut since it dropped in my inbox late last week. If a collaboration between multi-instrumentalist/producer Patrick Ryan with Surprise Chef and Karate Boogaloo’s members sounds like heaven, this one is ripe for you.

Under the name of Cantrips, Ryan and his friends recorded two tracks in one day. The results from that free-flowing session are two bombastic psychedelic funk tracks that take cues from David Axelrod’s work as composer and producer of psychedelic pop and rock group The Electric Prunes.

On the release are Patrick Ryan (organ), Lachlan Stuckey (guitar), Hudson Whitlock (drums), Jethro Curtin (piano), and Carl Lindeberg (bass).

Ryan said of the recording, “I wanted to create an environment where each of the performers could meditate on the concepts of perseverance and momentum; and challenge each of the players, myself included, to connect and be present within the recording space.”

We are thrilled to premiere ‘The Prayer’. Packed with sonic energy, Ryan crafts his unique and intricate sound, combining Farfisa organ textures, pulsating beats, driving bass, jubilant piano progressions and scuzzy guitar work, this track hits hard.

With the 7″ double single dropping on 14 April, via Dune Castle Records we can take a closer look at the intriguing A-side below.
