Talking Therapy Ensemble is a new project led by multi-instrumentalist and producer Emma-Jean Thackray.
If you’re into free jazz with subtle electronics and plenty of groove, you’re going to like the ensemble’s new EP, titled Talking Therapy.
In addition to Thackray (vocals, trumpet, and percussion), Binker Golding (saxophone), Matt Gedrych (bass), and Dougal Taylor (drums) make up Talking Therapy Ensemble.
The quartet aims to release stress and anxiety through “the cathartic process of improvisation.”
This project is a thrilling ride full of bold ideas in a massive collide of jazz, blues, punk, confessional poetry, bringing to mind artist such as Art Ensemble of Chicago, Sun Ra Arkestra, Albert Ayler, and Irreversible Entanglements.
Recorded at Abbey Road studios last year as part of the Abbey Road Amplify x Pitchfork London Sessions, you can grab the upcoming 12-inch vinyl release here.

Emma-Jean Thackray notes…
“When the band and I play live the music takes on new life. We use so much improvisation and there’s so much trust between us that every show is a brand new one where anything can happen. In the shows my music is a just a world that they can express themselves in – a diving board for their personalities to jump from. During our performances I’m no longer a solitary artist sat alone in a room with a piano and a pencil, but the music comes alive and I’m part of a proper band.”
