For his new release, Jonah Parzen-Johnson moves away from the previous world of “ambient jazz”, to explore the drone-like sounds of his baritone saxophone mixed with electronics.
The Brooklyn based baritone saxophonist and composer has shared ‘Stand Still’ the first track taken from his anticipated LP, ‘Imagine Giving Up’ coming Feb 7th via We Jazz.
As with all of Parzen-Johnson’s releases, the music comes with a deeper narrative which he also explores in his live performances. The new record is said to be “a deep reflection on life choices, risk, privilege and empathy.”
Speaking about the themes behind the project Parzen-Johnson explains, “Only a few people can really start over. Everyone else is left to struggle down the path they were assigned. The option to give up, to choose your own path, is power, and, hopefully, a call to action: take a risk to help someone.”
On ‘Stand Still’ he wonderfully connects the dots between meditative electronics, and abstract jazz to create a sound that is simultaneously accessible and deep, making for and easy listening experience.
