Album: Ruf Dug presents The Committee

Ruf Dug presents The Committee

Rhythm Section International is one of the most eclectic independent labels to appear in a while. With releases from artists like Henry Wu, Retiree, FYI Chris, 30/70, Al Dobson Jr and MC Pinty the imprint is defined by the quality of the music they put out and not the genre.

Their latest release finds the label teaming up with the original tropical cyberpunk Ruf Dug for the first fully in-house production for Rhythm Section, recorded from start to finish at their own South East London studio.

The press release states that Ruf Dug Presents The Committee “sits somewhere between fictional band and studio collaboration”. Ozzing with class but still embracing Ruf Dug’s cheeky DIY approach it features RS label owner Bradley Zero, Chris Watson (FYI Chris), Mali Baden-Powell (aka Z Lovecraft), Natalie Wildgoose and sisters Sienna and Nadina Mustafa.

Slick street soul, digidub, Chicago house, acid jazz, and lovers rock all make an appearance on this brilliant five tracker.

Opening the record with the head-nodding groove of ‘Get Down To It’ surprisingly features vocals from Watson which combined superbly with the driving synthesised rhythm. The tempo then dips slightly as Sienna Mustafa gets sensual and sultry on ‘Fell From Stars’ with the help of her sister Nadina who laces the cut with laidback rhyme. Next up comes ‘All U Got 2 Do’ where we find Bradley Zero on the mic sounding like a natural with his soothing melodic tone, while Natalie Wildgoose bounces cheerfully along to an infectious reggae groove on ‘Sunrise’. The EP concludes with the stripped-back version excursion of ‘Sunrise’ courtesy of Mali Baden-Powell.

A wonderfully varied album that’s a must buy for lovers of the leftfield side of dance music — highly recommended.

Catch Ruf Dug and Zero later this month at the latter’s residency, Globetrotting With Bradley Zero, at XOYO. Tickets and info here.

Dug Presents The Committee is out now via Rhythm Section International. Buy from SOTU or Bandcamp.
