With so much good music coming through thick and fast, it’s easy for brand-new music to drop online and go overlooked. To help prevent this, we’ve picked five essential albums that you may have missed but need to hear. Stream new releases from Noname, Madison Washington, Christoph El Truento, Insólito UniVerso and Sabiwa. If you like what you hear, support the artists.
Noname – Room 25
A magnetising album where Noname’s delicately spoken raps are fused with hard-hitting hip-hop and mellow instrumentals. Modern day hip-hop at its best, engaging and uplifting.
Madison Washington – ((((FACTS)))))
A wildly inventive new record from Malik Ameer & producer/DJ Thatmanmonkz inspired by the historical Madison Washington (who led the first and only successful slave rebellion in the U.S.) Brilliant stuff!
Christoph El Truento – LWMP18
On his new album, Christoph El Truento interlaces footwork song structures and rhythms with elements of jazz, soul, baile funk, and R&B. Over 23 tracks El Truento keeps things varied and interesting throughout. Please don’t sleep on this one.
Insólito UniVerso – La Candela del Río
Paris-based Venezuelan quartet Insólito UniVerso recently dropped their debut LP La Candela del Río. In the space of 8 tracks, the band fuses traditional Venezuelan styles, such as joropo, merengue caraqueño, or tambores de San Millán with psych, chanson, and contemporary electronics. Grab a vinyl copy before they all vanish.
Sabiwa – 輪 迴
We gave you a little taster yesterday now dive into the entire project! 輪迴’ (English: reincarnation) is the second album from Taiwanese sound and performance artist Sabiwa. Over 12 tracks she interprets reincarnation through bass-heavy rhythms, dissected sound art and intense vocal gymnastics. Don’t sleep, you have been warned!
