South African Malombo percussionist, Thabang Tabane featured on Sibusile Xaba astonishing debut full length ‘Open Letter to Adoniah’ one of our favourite albums from last year.
The two pair up once more for Tabane’s new track, ‘Nyanda Yeni’ which also features Dennis Moanganei Magagula and Thulani Ntuli.
The track serves as the first taste from his forthcoming debut album Matjale due on September 14th via Mushroom Hour Half Hour.
The son of legendary guitarist, the late Philip Tabane, who is regarded as the architect of South Africa’s malombo style, the video features his late father.
The music video, directed and edited by The Straight Jacket Tailor, splices archival footage taken from apartheid-era cinema from South Africa. The images are borrowed from 1950s movies and variety shows with some footage for 1970s propaganda films endorsing the notion of ‘separate development’. The footage is played in different order to tell a new story, which dismantles the apartheid-era’s fallacies of coonish fantasy.
