Great news! Cosmic jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington has shared his first release of note since his universally acclaimed 2015 debut album The Epic.
The new album titled Harmony of Difference is a six-part suite that explores the philosophical possibilities of the musical technique known as “counterpoint,” which Washington defines as “the art of balancing similarity and difference to create harmony between separate melodies.”
Speaking to We Transfer, he explained “I wanted to do something that celebrates the differences that we have amongst each other. We always look at it as a burden, but it’s really a blessing.”
Each of the first five movements offers something different to the overall sound. “Truth,” the sixth movement, and stand out fuses all five pieces into one simultaneous performance.
“My hope is that witnessing the beautiful harmony created by merging different musical melodies will help people realise the beauty in our own differ.”
No surprise that Washington has once again made one of this year’s best records!
