Born in 1951 in Essaouira, Mahmoud Gania came from one of the great Gnawa families. A respected singer and guimbri player he was one of the most prolific recording musicians in Morocco.
From the 1970s until his death in 2015 he released many albums for a variety of Moroccan labels as well as recording with artists as diverse as Pharoah Sanders, Peter Brotzmann, James Holden and Floating Points.
Freshly minted Brighton based label Hive Mind Records have just released his last studio recording Colours of the Night for the first time outside of Morocco.
The album is a deeply spiritual journey through ‘Gnawa’ trance music and if you are new to the guimbri wizard then this would be a good place to start.
We’re delighted to premiere Foulani, a near ten-minute piece of rootsy, skillfully plucked guimbri and uplifting chants.
Hypnotically deep music of the highest order, but you don’t need me to tell you just how good this is, right?
