Cosmic Myth Record has reissued Sun Ra & His Solar Arkestra’s 1966 jazz epic The Magic City.
The album is notable for the sprawling near thirty-minute-long title track. Described by critic Simon Adams as “27 minutes of controlled freedom.” “The Magic City” was never performed in concert; saxophonist John Gilmore said it was “unreproducible, a tapestry of sound.”
On the flip side, the four works are far shorter than the title track but still reflect the same improvisational approach, spatiality, and lack of structure.
The album also includes historical and technical liner notes from Ben Young who restored and remastered the album with his Triple Point Records partner Joe Lizzi.
