New York-based artist Josiah Wise aka serpentwithfeet has teamed up with London-based producer The Haxan Cloak for his debut with Tri Angle Records. Having already built a credible buzz around himself with some loose tracks and collaborations with Fantasma, Jumping Back Slash, and CHLLNGR – he emerges with the beautiful “flickering,” his best song to date.
Having spent time in Europe, drifting between London and Paris, gradually refining his musical ideas, Wise has been quietly crafting his unique “PaganGospelSoul” style.
“I decided in 2012 or in 2013 that I didn’t want a band anymore,” explains Wise, “I was like, ‘What would happen if I did my R&B thing over this classical shit?’ It took a while, but I started to wonder if I could make something that satisfies other people and myself. I want the music to resonate with people. I didn’t start thinking about that until I moved to New York, to be honest.”
The sparse, piano-driven backing is excellent, and Wise’s fantastically unique voice sounds incredible. Together, Wise’s and Cloak’s chemistry is undeniable, making for a track that is honest and emotional.
