Gilles Peterson In Memory Of Murk Murphy

The definition of a jazz singer is a singer who sings jazz, Mark Murphy

One of the great American jazz vocalists, Mark Murphy, passed away last Thursday at the age of 83.

The iconic artist passed away after complications of pneumonia, his manager, Jean-Pierre Leduc, said. He had a prolific career and was most noted for his definitive and unique vocalese and vocal improvisations with both melody and lyrics. He was the recipient of 1996, 1997, 2000, and 2001 Downbeat Magazine Readers Jazz Poll for Best Male Vocalist of the Year and was also the recipient of Six Grammy Award Nominations for Best Vocal Jazz Performance.

In memory of Murphy Broadcaster/DJ, Gilles Peterson posted a mix from his archives (2008) celebrating Murphy’s unique voice in music, with a long and prolific career spanning 60 years and 40 albums.

“A lot of singers attempt to sing jazz, use aspects of jazz in their arrangeĀments, but without really getting into the whole thing,” Murphy once said.

His greatness knew no bounds, and he will be sorely missed!

Rest In Peace, Mark Murphy.
