Jay Nemor – Just Sayin
Jay Nemor, born in Houston, Texas, is a singer, saxophonist, songwriter, and producer deeply connected to the very roots of soul music. He delivers with a smooth and soulful style that is in touch with the classic sound of soul and R&B, imparting his passion for life and music thru his signature bass-baritone voice. It’s deep soulful music that’s warm and inviting like the golden sun. A few of my favourite tracks are “Smiling Faces”, “Prelude To Sunday Morning” and “Music”. There aren’t any fancy tricks just 8 well-crafted songs that will set your mind right and put you at ease. Enjoy!
Bastien Keb – Dinking In The Shadows of Zizou
I stumbled upon Bastien Keb while searching for something else and was instantly drawn in by his intriguing sound. Psychedelic, soulful, eerie, experimental, ambient and avant-garde – experimental hip hop and soul music, all played live using battered/borrowed instruments. With a backdrop of VHS home movies samples, kitchen sink percussion, fuzzy spoken word and wild brass. It’s definitely an interesting introduction into what Keb has to offer. Listen, name your price and download.
Sampa The Great – The Great Mixtape
If you’ve been following the site recently, then you’ll know we’re big fans of Sampa The Great. The African-born and Sydney-based poet, singer-songwriter aims to inspire through music, poetry, and visual art. At first listen you hear the poetic influences in her music. She captures you with her thought provoking words, yet keeps you laughing and enjoying the simplicity of creativity. The 12-track project is a politically charged affair and is a fantastic introduction to this exciting artist. It’s hard to believe that this is free.
A-F-R-O – A-F-R-O DOOM
When 17-year old A-F-R-O broke onto the scene last year, he had many naysayers questioning whether his freestyles were indeed off the cuff or rehearsed. His much talked about performance on R.A. the Rugged Man’s YouTube channel was met with cynicism and praise in equal measure. One year later the skepticism has stopped, and his talent is getting the plaudits it deserves. For the one-year anniversary, he dropped a mixtape of freestyles over 6 MF DOOM related beats. 10th Letter – Portals & Compasses
Portals & Compasses is an audible voyage that explores the ties between jazz, hip hop, ghetto tech, psych, early electronic music and the glue that binds them. A sonic “choose your own adventure” hero’s tale, this album is a journey through the color spectrums and landscapes made by sound. Each song a portal to a new world for the ears and mind. If you like experimental music and you want to hear something a little bit different from the norm, I highly recommend you pick this album up.
