Brownswood Recordings reputation precedes it. Their releases reflect the labels wide open music policy, which ranges everything from jazz, soul, latin, world, R&B, death jazz and all points between. The label was founded in 2006 by DJ and broadcaster Gilles Peterson, the aim of the label was to provide a platform for the many unsigned artists that were sending their music to Gilles to play on his Worldwide show on BBC Radio 1. Early releases on the label come from a (60 piece orchestra) The Heritage Orchestra, jazz vocalist Jose James and Japanese “death jazz” band SOIL&“PIMP” SESSIONS, definitely a statement of intent and in keeping with their open music policy. The label gain worldwide recognition, breaking into the mainstream consciousness with the release of Jose James’ sophomore album ‘Blackmagic’. Since that time Brownswood output has been nothing short of sensational with quality albums from singer/songwriter Ben Westbeech, Mercury-nominated artist Ghospoet, Zara Macfarlane, Mala, Owiny Sigoma and loads more. As well as artist albums, they’ve released a number of compilations series including Brownswood Bubblers, Havana Cultura and Brownswood electr*c. The label is due to drop it’s most recent project, the upcoming album, Brasil Bam Bam Bam on May 27th .The album is made up of a collective put together by Peterson named, Sonzeira, the project features both veteran and modern Brazilian artists like Marcus Valle, Sue Jorge, Wilson Das Neves, Elza Soares, Nina Miranda and Arlindo Cruz.
