It’s been a minute since Low Leaf dropped her last record, the incredible, ambitious UNEARTHly. Last year in July fact, a time in which has seen her tour her homeland in the Philippines, where she visited back in 2012 and experienced a spiritual awakening that gave her the impetus to record AKASHAALAY, which is dedicated to her motherland. Although Low Leaf has self-released a string of mini albums since her 2011 debut, Chrysalis, this will be her first label album.
The 10-track album finds Low Leaf at her experimental best, fusing harp, guitar and piano with electronic beats. Whilst we’ve always loved her work, there were times when it was a bit of a chore to listen too in one sitting, however on AKASHAALAY she has seemly found a middle ground amid all the noise, glitchy textures and hyper rhythms that could often be a distraction on her previous work.
If we had an “Album Of The Month” feature then this would be it, an accomplished body of work and one of the most exciting releases thus far in 2014.
