Merrill Garbus will release her new album ‘Nikki Nack’ on May 5th

Something brand new from tUnE-yArDs and a touch of something different too. We’re use to hearing Merrill Garbus so full of life and vigour, channeling her oddball nature in an array of complex noises. So for her new single “ Wait For A Minute ”  its refreshing to hear Garbus on what is a straightforward smooth R&B number that also has just the right amount of quirkiness in keeping with the artist usual output.

The track was produced by Malay ( Frank Ocean, Alicia Keys) and the song has a definite Channel Orange vibe to it. Speaking about Malay the singer was at first reluctant to work the the producder, saying:

“We were nervous to work with Malay, as we’d never had experience with producers before. But he quickly gave us confidence, teaching us to create a full sound while maintaining a very sparse instrumentation. The tiny details give the song depth, so the vocal is allowed to take up a lot of space.”

Merrill is on something different here, and I like what she’s bringing. What will she have next up her sleeve, we can’t wait to find out. ‘Nikki Nack’ is out May th.Tune in and listen above.
