The Leftovers

Treat your taste buds to these mouthwatering leftovers!

Keeping up with the daily flood of music is impossible. We try to share everything, but gems slip through the cracks. The Leftovers fixes that (a little): every Friday, we dig through the emails and drop five releases in bite-sized pieces we couldn’t ignore. This week, Tara Clerkin Trio, DREAMSCAPES, Atlantis Jazz Ensemble, and more. Dig in and savour the finds.

I’ve been following this Bristol-based trio since recommending their self-titled debut album back in 2020. Their follow-up EP, In Spring, was one of my favourite releases of 2021. That took things to another level with its refined mix of avant-pop sensibility and woozy downtempo grooves. Their
2023 EP On The Turning Ground brought a five-song collection of quixotic, emotional redolence. With their second album on the horizon, the trio drop the title track ‘Somewhere Good’. The slow-burning number takes time to lift off, but when it does, it’s an absolute joy. Yet another outstanding track from these folks.

London newcomers DREAMSCAPES continue to prove their promising status. If you’ve heard their cover of ‘lucy in the sky with diamonds’, then you’ll know they have a knack for breathing new life into a classic song. They’re back at it again this time turning their attention to the traditional folk song ‘black is the colour’. Clocking in at just over three minutes, this re-imagined piece captivates with its elegance. The soothing instrumentation envelops you, creating a comforting journey that is hard to resist. Listen to the track below and look out for their debut album, Tales of a Wanderer, which is out on April 16th.

Greek mythology and jazz connect once again on the third album from Atlantis Jazz Ensemble, who return with ‘Mystic Suite’. The three powerful sons of the god Kronos divided up the cosmos after overthrowing their father: Poseidon ruled the sea, Zeus commanded the heavens, and Hades reigned over the underworld. In 2016, we had ‘Oceanic Suite’, and in 2023, they gave us ‘Celestial Suite, and now, the Pierre Chrรฉtien-led project gets all mystical. I like this a lot; it’s another superb set of modern spiritual jazz. Try the horn-drenched melancholy soul-jazz of ‘Broken Dreams’, or the Coltranian vibes on the spiritually-charged ‘Spirits Unseen’ to get an idea of why this is currently in heavy rotation.

Marking their return with the banger that is It’s Really Easy (To Spend A Lot Of Money), Girls Chat Room’s new single, from their upcoming album Dracula’s Daughter, couldn’t be any more infectious if it tried. Their chug-pop style blends upbeat basslines and precise drum programming with keen observations of modern life, such as how easily one can spend money. This new track features whistling and a sharp tempo change. With this track, the new album, which is out May 1st, is shaping up to be quite something!

Something new from Pedro Ricardo always has our ears. Oxalรก Cante con Tempo (Parte 2) is the Lisbon-based producer’s second 7″ EP featuring celebrated fado singer Ana Margarida Prado. What you’ll find is Portuguese poetry meeting Brazilian songwriting tradition with electronic touches. It’s a lovely prelude to his second album, Hear, Sense, and Feel, which lands next Friday.
