With Tomorrow’s Yearning, Swedish duo Yesterday’s Princess (Fredrik Bergsten and Marcus Larsson) offer a meticulously crafted debut that feels like a dream remembered in hi-fi. Rooted in modal jazz-funk but filtered through the sensibilities of hip-hop producers turned studio auteurs, their forthcoming EP radiates a moody, cinematic warmth.
The opening track Anemoia, anchored by A.J. Hall’s reworked live drums and soaked in Rhodes, melodic bass lines, and understated guitar, captures the essence of nostalgia for moments never lived.
There’s no throwback gimmickry here; the duo trades dusty retroism for a clean, immersive mix. Their background as audio engineers shows in every sonic detail, with tone prioritised over flash. The track unfolds slowly, with layers that evoke Swedish folk melancholy, ‘70s library music, and hazy beat tapes.
Released via DeepMatter Records on 25th July, Tomorrow’s Yearning sits comfortably in today’s forward-thinking jazz orbit while carving its own path. It’s a small record with a vast emotional reach, subtle, soulful, and deeply felt.
